DIY Flower Arrangement

We’ve lived in our apartment for three months now, and it’s a season of life we couldn’t really prepare for. We came off an amazing high of paying off debt after selling our house. Without a mortgage, garden, repairs or showings to worry about- we’ve been able to just be. I think it’d be easy to view this move as some sort of finish line. But it hasn’t felt that way.

Shedding that burden + lightening our responsibilities has actually sparked a new beginning. It’s allowed space for us to do work within ourselves, stretch out and grow. Dream our next dreams. That sounds pretty and flowery when I write it, but gosh y’all. It’s hard work starting again. To dig up things that have been buried under the weight of stress. To keep going and dreaming. It’s beautiful work and will yield this whole story we’d have missed otherwise.

I've loved keeping fresh flowers in our apartment over these several weeks. Aside from being pretty and happy, they've reminded me of the beauty in the process. The growth and work that's happening in us now will not go to waste!

These flowers- stock, eucalyptus and (what I think are) mums- were less than ten dollars total at Trader Joe's. I mean, you just don't have to spend a ton of money on flowers! When I buy flowers to arrange, I like buying one star of the show flower, one filler flower and one greenery.

Remove all the leaves from the stems. They just clutter up the arrangement and fill up the vase. Not sure where to cut? Hold the stem next to the vase to see where you'd like the flower to end up. Trim accordingly, always on a diagonal. Begin adding the filler flower first, placing stems at an angle, one at a time. Turn the vase as you add so you can see from every angle.

I then add the star of the show flower, spaced out evenly or in clusters of two or three. I've learned that flowers are not as fragile as you may think. Don't be scared to really get those stems where you want them. Move them around, try a different angle.

Finally, I fill in with the eucalyptus. This fills in space between flowers, but I also am tucking it in around the edge of the vase. I love when it drapes over the vase!

Working with flowers is messy. Just embrace it. Keep adding and editing until you love the result!

Finished! Mine turned out a little messy, but I think it's fun. The stock drooped a bit over the last coupe days, so I've taken a few stems out and repositioned them. You can make it what you want! So, my challenge for you - before the end of the week, go buy yourself some cheapo flowers, grab a vase or cup or whatever and create a little happy arrangement for a corner of your house. Would love to see how yours turn out!
