I've been so inspired this week after seeing Made for More from Rachel Hollis on Monday night. I love when resources and motivation comes to you at just the right time, and I feel like God just plopped this on my lap exactly when I needed it. I wanted to share my five biggest takeaways from the film in hopes it inspires you too!
1. Embrace your past in order to embrace the future.
I'm one to dwell on the past. I relive cringe-worthy moments or regrets. I worry I'll forget all the amazing things that have happened. I wouldn't say I embrace my past necessarily. As I sit with that word- embrace- I realize it is different than dwell, carry, hold tightly. It makes me think of the way God reminds us of what he has brought us through and the way we celebrate milestones and anniversaries. Thoughtfully appreciating everything we've done and experienced that has brought us to this moment. To acknowledge what I've made it through is to acknowledge that I am able to make it through again.
2. You are a glass vase.
Oh, I loved this metaphor. You are a glass vase and someone is pouring water into you. As others have needs, it is so tempting to tip over a little and water those around you- your kids, your spouse, your friends, etc. But eventually, what happens? You fall over and everything spills out. The alternative is to stand tall, allowing that water to keep pouring in. Then what happens? You are filled up to overflowing. And you can keep on overflowing all those good things onto the people around you and into the world!
3. Form new habits 30 days at a time.
When I make goals and want to form new habits, my list "that I'll start on Monday" is twenty lines deep. It's just impossible to succeed that way. Try forming one new habit in 30 days- and succeed! Then, layer on another new habit during the next 30 days. By building success slowly, you're more likely to stick with it and build confidence and integrity.
4. Boil your list down to the ONE thing that will help you meet your goal faster.
Queen of list-making and planning over here! I'm very good at planning the how of my goals. And sometimes, as embarrassing as it is, I don't actually get to the meat of the work. Brainstorm every possible thing you could do to push towards a goal, then find the one thing on that list that gets you from right now to meeting that goal faster. Chances are just doing the work is the fastest way. Planning and talking about it are great and have their place, but often are a cover up for procrastination.
5. No one cares about your dreams as much as you do.
I feel called to the life and work I am living right now. The reasons why I am giving my all as a mom + wife, business owner and creative are enough to light a fire in me and keep me going. Just because I feel that passion and calling does not mean others will understand it. I think back to several big decisions I've made in my life, and every time, I ran into people who didn't understand and weren't able to fully support me. And that's ok! Pressing into who you're created to be does not always equal making everyone happy. I am loved, regardless!
If you haven't read Girl, Wash Your Face, I highly recommend it for the women in my life! It's a very honest look at our inner dialogue and the lies we so easily believe about ourselves.
